WWE 2018: We Played On Ps4 Pro, WWE Wrestling 2018 Game Review-Test
After a nice 2017 iteration, but not yet up to the expectations of wrestling fans, 2K Games is retrying a chance with WWE 2K18. In order to discover the game, gamepad in hand, we went to New York a few days before Summerslam. If the arrival of many superstars, such as Seth Rollins, Alexa Bliss or Dean Ambrose, set fire to the presentation, it is the game developers Yuke’s Media Creation and Visual Concepts that has caught our attention. The opportunity to note many improvements on PS4 Pro, which should enrich a little more the experience of the players. Despite a fairly light demo content, the latter suggests beautiful things for the series, which gains realism and gradually approaches the level of entertainment offered by the WWE.
After a short introduction from Mark Little, executive producer of WWE 2K18, we were able to get their hands on a first version of the game despite the atmosphere of fire that reigned in the room, while the journalists looked forward to the arrival of Seth Rollins and his opponents of the weekend. If the demo proved to be quite short, only three types of fights and ten superstars, it will have above all allowed to highlight the graphic evolutions of the title while introducing some new gameplay more than welcome. Unfortunately, WWE 2K18 retains the same game engine as the previous episodes of the license and we will not expect a graphic revolution. On the other hand, we must applaud the work of developers who, despite limited resources, manage to refine their license tirelessly.
LET THE SHOW BEGINS!
Starting with the superstars of the WWE who enjoy a special care. The textures of skin seem much more realistic thanparavan and the reflection of the light on the sweat of the fighters sublimates the whole. Face modeling also breaks a gap and it is with pleasure that we observe the multitude of details on the faces of AJ Styles, Bobby Roode or John Cena. The body of the fighters is also more reactive and we can even observe some folds on the abs of the wrestlers. All in all, they make a lot of “alive” than before thanks to more realistic facial expressions, but also entries much more worked than in the opus 2017.
Aware that entry to the ring is just as important as the technical abilities of the athletes, 2K put the package in the presentation of each wrestler. The staging is more faithful to what we can see on TV, and the atmosphere generated by some entries is much more felt. A feeling reinforced by the presence of a less generic audience than in the previous episodes. The models are more varied, as are the clothes, which makes the room much more lively. Many animations have been added and the robotic side of the fans is fading somewhat. Of course, we are still far from the audience of NBA 2K, but it is still a very nice improvement.
GIVE ME HELL YEAH!
Nevertheless, not everything is perfect, like the hair problems of some wrestlers. Indeed, long hair is still a real headache for 2K teams and the result is far from being to the advantage of superstars. A little flaw that will make some smile while the most fussy may rattle. Aside from this little concern, the game displays graphics pleasing to the eye and the finest observers will note many improvements to the image of the rings more realistic ring. It will still wait for the arrival of the final game to really judge the graphic quality of the title. Indeed, during our game session, we could only try the PS4 Pro version. If the difference between the two versions should not be huge, it will probably make some concessions on a standard PS4. Similarly, the Elimination Chamber mode has suffered multiple slowdowns that are detrimental to the experience, but in this way, this problem should be corrected.
As for gameplay, WWE 2K18 does not break codes and is very close to what we saw in the previous episode. Nevertheless, the game has undergone a lot of small modifications that make the parties much more enjoyable. To begin with the timing of the counters, which is much easier to grasp. The blows carried by the opponents are more readable and make it possible to anticipate the timing of the counter more easily. A good point for casual gamers who want to have a good time without having to sand the game for long hours. Similarly, the parties between friends take another dimension and any neophyte should be able to get by after a few minutes of handling.
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
To achieve this, the method is quite simple since you just have to press R1 and use the Right joystick to start the port. Once the opponent is raised, you can change his position by tilting the joystick left and right, but also from bottom to top. And when you find the right position, you can trigger contextual attacks by pressing the Square key, which allows for example to send the enemy wrestler to the posts outside the ring. Attention, the technique consumes energy and it will be very difficult to place if your fighter is lacking in stamina. Similarly, a lightweight will not be able to carry a heavyweight, like TJP who was unable to carry Bobby Roode because of his weight.
ALWAYS THIS SAME 3D ENGINE, BUT ..
In addition to these improvements on the overall gameplay of the title, the developers have also reworked the Rumble mode. In order to make the game mode shorter, tired wrestlers move more easily over the third string. When a fighter takes too much damage, he rolls to the ground to get closer to the outside of the ring which exposes them to a certain elimination. The mode becomes more fluid in its progress and we avoid spending hours and hours on a match. However, if the character who gets out of the ring is still in good physical condition, a new mini-game is triggered to avoid passing over the third string. Here, you must quickly press the buttons Cross / Square / Round / Triangle while they appear randomly on the screen. Quite simple.
Despite an aging engine that has many shortcomings, the developers of Yuke’s Media Creation and Visual Concepts have put the package to offer players an experience ever more faithful to the shows of the WWE. Wrestlers benefit from more faithful modeling and many visual details, such as reflections, contribute to the realism of the latter. The public is also offering complete makeover with many models and movements much more human. The venue is then won by the atmosphere of the crowd and entries wrestlers are finally up to our expectations. The effects of light are multiplying and it is with pleasure that we observe each time the arrival of the combatants. The gameplay is also gaining fluidity and the extended games are becoming more rare. If the regulars of the series will not be disoriented, the arrival of the litters should offer more possibilities during the matches. Nevertheless, it will still wait to see more to really judge the final quality of the title. Playable, only, on PS4 Pro during our gaming session, WWE 2K18 may have to make some concessions on standard PS4. Similarly, the content of the demo was quite light and the mystery still remains around the various game modes (MyCareer, Universe, etc.).
